Tour Duration: From Half a Day to 02/ 03 Days
Tour Destinations: Delhi
Birding in Delhi and the national capital region offers very good opportunities if you do not have much time to explore other birding hotspots in India. The Delhi NCR area has been recognized as an important bird area (IBA) because of its rich avian diversity.
Two typical habitats dominate the ecology of Delhi, flood plans of the River Yamuna covering east, northeast, and southeast, and the scrub forest of Delhi ridge that originates from the Aravali Range in the south and encircles the west, and northwest parts of the city. Apart from these, there are depression areas like Najafgarh drain, big lakes (like Sultanpur and Surajpur), grassland and open fields, etc. Apart from having diverse habitat types, Delhi lies in a very important migration zone.
Diverse habitat types and its location attribute over 450 bird species recorded in Delhi making it the second bird-rich capital city in the world. Being close to the Himalayas and on the migration corridor, Delhi records many birds during the passage of their migration apart from those wintering here. Birds from as far as Eastern Europe and Africa migrate here to take refuse during winters in Delhi.
Hotspots like Okhla Bird Sanctuary, Sultanpur National Park, Najafgarh Drain, Yamuna Biodiversity Park and flood plans of the river Yamuna, Aravali Biodiversity Park at Gurgaon and Vasant Kunj are some of the places where one can go for birding in Delhi. Half a day of birding in Delhi easily fetches you a list of 50 to 100 species (depending on the time of the year).
